There are hacked drivers that do support some 7 and 8s if I recall, but they are somewhat unstable and only support a subset of cards-- not sure of the 7300gs is one of them. Btw, do you mean the Geforce 4 is an MX4000?

There wasn't a 400, just 420/440/460. If it's a 4000 you're getting a variant of the 440 (narrower bus but higher clocked) which is still not a terrible card for a lot of Win9x era games (maybe 2001-2002 and older with reasonable performance). Or you could be meaning it's a Geforce 2 MX400.

Which is a bit worse but again still okay if you are playing older games that won't work well on, say, WinXP (pre-2000 stuff). The GeForce2 MX and GeForce4 MX are both stripped-down versions of the GeForce 2 GPU, a DirectX 7 part. You'd be better off getting your hands on something like a GeForce 4 Ti, GeForce 6600 or 6800 AGP (they made lots of variants of this card) or a DX8 or DX9 ATi card: the Radeon 8500, 9100, 9200, 9500, 9700, 9800, X700 or X800. A lot of these cards are quite inexpensive on eBay, and will be much faster than your GeForce MX.

Something else to look for if you have money or patience is a vintage Voodoo2 or Voodoo3 to play some of the older Glide-only games that will only work with 3dfx cards of that era. As mentioned, the GeForce 7 series and later are not supported in Windows 98.
